FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions we hear most about requesting equipment, donating, and how we work.
Requesting equipment
Who is eligible to receive equipment?
Anyone who needs durable medical equipment and is facing financial hardship. We don’t require proof of income, insurance documentation, or financial paperwork. We do ask for a prescribing physician so we can confirm the equipment is right for you.
Is the equipment really free?
Yes, 100%. There are no fees, no insurance billing, no deductibles, and no fine print. We are funded entirely by donations and volunteers.
Why do you need my physician’s information?
We contact your doctor to confirm the equipment is medically appropriate. Different injuries need different equipment, and the wrong fit can slow recovery or make things worse. It is about your safety. Verification usually takes 1 to 2 business days.
How long does the process take?
Physician verification typically takes 1 to 2 business days, and delivery or pickup usually happens within 2 to 3 business days after that. Most people have their equipment within a week. If it is urgent, say so in the request form and we’ll do our best to speed things up.
What areas do you serve?
We offer local delivery and pickup throughout the greater Seattle and Olympia areas. Outside that, we can often ship equipment on a case-by-case basis. Email us if you are outside Washington and need help.
What if the item I need isn’t listed?
Email us with your equipment needs. Donations come in regularly, and if we don’t have it, we’ll see if we can procure it for you.
Do you offer reimbursement grants?
Yes. If you have already had to buy medical equipment and are facing financial hardship, we offer equipment reimbursement grants to help cover the cost. Email us with what you bought and your situation, and we’ll walk you through applying.
Donating equipment
Can I donate equipment that has been used?
Absolutely. Most of what we receive has been used, and that is the whole idea. We just ask that items work properly. We handle all cleaning and sanitization.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
One More Step is a registered 501(c)(3), so equipment and financial donations are generally tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. If you ship us equipment, your shipping costs may qualify too. Check with your tax advisor for your specific situation.
Do you pick up donations?
Yes, anywhere in the greater Seattle and Olympia areas. Email us and we’ll set up a time. From anywhere else in the US, you can ship donations to us.
About One More Step
How is the equipment sanitized?
Every item is inspected and then cleaned with hospital-grade disinfectants following clinical protocols, overseen by Dr. Mandi McKay, a retired physician on our board. Anything that can’t be safely sanitized or is structurally compromised is never distributed.
How can I get involved beyond donating?
We need help with pickups and deliveries, sanitization, outreach, and fundraising. Healthcare providers can refer patients, and hospitals or clinics can help us set up a donation pipeline for equipment that would otherwise be thrown away. See volunteer options.
